A pilgrimage on the White Mountains of Western Crete (Part I of III).

Since I was a little kid this view of the White Mountains of Western Crete always fascinated me. Either baking hot and dry like they look now in summer, or covered in snow and white (hence the name) in winter, they intrigued me and I always wanted to climb up there sometime. I always wanted to visit the little church of the Holy Spirit which you can see as a white little spot on the side of the mountain.

But this is the closest I had ever managed to be to it, as you can see in the photo above.

Recently (relatively ), new roads have been cut on the mountains, to help the shepherds and their hers, to carry food and water for the animals up there. They are mostly unpaved and difficult to drive, and they must be serviced regularly so that one can drive up there reasonably safely. I tried to find me someone who new those roads and go up there together.

After I could not find someone, I asked directions on how to go and where to turn and decided to go alone. I got lost a couple of times, and took the wrong turns but I was able to see the beautiful places on the mountains, those you have seen on my previous posts. Finally I found someone up there and asked him how to get to that little white church and got new directions. I had to leave the 4X4 at some point and continue on foot taking a goats trail along the side of the mountain for approximately 1000 yards and I would end up there.

Can you see the trail..?
Το βλέπετε το μονοπάτι;

Here it is.

Right in front of me.

I am walking on it.
Or climbing it.

Dare you look down on your left..?
Τολμάς να κοιτάξεις κάτω στ' αριστερά σου..;

Or behind you the way you came from.

(To be continued)                                                                                                                    (Συνεχίζεται)

The terrain looks very rugged! It's beautiful but steep, and the rocks look loose so it would be easy to slip and fall.

Laughter, I found myself holding my breath as you bega to get closer to the edge...great narrative. So were you finally able to make it to the little white church...if so, can hardly wait to view it. What fun to chase your dream from so long ago and to finally make it happen~

I've missed reading your blog for a while and have enjoyed getting caught up. The church would have been a definite destination for me, too. It is beautiful. The simple white plastered walls with the curved nook are perfect.
